As the Annual Enrollment Period begins on October 15, you're going to be hit from every direction—phone calls from agents, piles of mail in your mailbox, and TV commercials promising the world. Starting October 1, agents will have access to the updated Medicare plan details, and you can look up licensed agents through the Medicare Agent Hub or search for "Medicare agents near me."
But here's the truth: most of the mail you'll receive is simply marketing. Some of it looks official. Some of it appears urgent. Some pieces are even designed to look like they're coming from Social Security. It can be alarming, confusing, and stressful. Many of these mailers are designed to get you to call a number—and once you do, you may find yourself in a system that rushes you through important decisions.
And don't put too much stock in the commercials promising $3,000 in grocery benefits or large amounts of money back on your Social Security. While some people may qualify for certain benefits, many do not. These ads are designed to get you to pick up the phone, not to educate you.
Why Choosing a Local Independent Agent Matters
This is exactly why choosing a local independent agent matters. There is a significant difference between working with an independent agent and speaking with someone in a call center. Call center agents are often expected to handle a high volume of calls, with managers encouraging them to keep conversations short and move quickly to the next caller. That pressure can leave little time to discuss the personal details that matter most. They may not have the opportunity to slow down, thoroughly explain your options, or ensure you fully understand your choices.
A local independent agent isn't working against a call-time quota. They're not being rushed to end the conversation. They can take the time to walk you through your options, answer your questions, compare plans, and help you feel confident in the decision you're making.
And after you enroll, that same agent is there to continue supporting you—with real follow-up, personalized customer service, and someone who knows your situation. You're not calling into a rotating call center queue or speaking with a different person every time you need assistance.
Choosing the right agent helps you make an informed decision so you can move forward with confidence, knowing your healthcare needs are the priority.
In Hawaiian culture, "Pono" means doing what is right, acting with integrity, and maintaining moral balance. It’s a beautiful concept.
